wàn yī         rú ɡuǒ

 万  一    VS    如 果

“wàn yī”means “in case” or “if by any chance”, indicating a supposition of small possibility. It usually refers to things not expected.

“rú ɡuǒ”has the same meaning with “wàn yī”,but it does not refer to things not expected, only means “in case” or “if by any chance”.

For example:

1. nǐqù yǐqián xiān ɡěi tā dǎ ɡè diàn huà , wàn yī tā bú zài jiā zěn me bàn ?

你 去 以前 先 给 他 打个 电话,万一 他不 在家 怎么办?

(You go to there first to call him, in case he is not at home?)

2. rú ɡuǒ mínɡ tiān nǐ yào lái wǒ jiā , qǐnɡ xiān ɡěi wǒ dǎ ɡè diàn hu

如果 明天 你要 来 我家,请先 给我 打个 电话。
