Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes

mooncake

The must-eat food of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is mooncake. There are several mooncake origin stories, but all include a common theme of mooncake eating being a symbol and celebration of victory.

It’s said, during Tang Gao Zu years, the general Li Jing returned on 15th August after defeating Huns. Businessman from the city of Turpan paid tribute (in the form of cake) to the emperor to celebrate the victory. Gao Zu-Li Yuan took this gorgeous cake box and distributed the cake to his all officials.

Since then, mooncake production has evolved and become more diverse. Today, there are many regional variants of the mooncake with different flavors. Beijing-style, Suzhou-style, Cantonese-style and Yunnan-style mooncakes are four of the main kinds. Recently, Hainan-style fruit mooncakes has captured more market share.
