How to Express Your Mood in Chinese

There are two ways to express your mood: facial expression and spoken language. Whether you feel happy or angry, it’s important to speak it out to share your happiness or express your anger. Now, let’s learn some words to express your mood in Chinese together!

Modern psychology divides mood into four types: 快乐、愤怒、悲哀、恐惧。

kuài lè 快乐: Pleasure
gāo xìng 高兴: Pleased
kāi xīn 开心: Joyful
huān lè 欢乐: Delighted
yú kuài 愉快: Pleasant

The meaning of these words are similar for they all are used to describe someone feeling happy. But ‘欢乐’ and ‘愉快’ are more frequently used to describe that a subject or an event is pleasant.

wǒ jīn tiān hěn kāi xīn ，yīn wéi jīn tiān shì wǒ de shēng rì 。
我今天很开心，因为今天是我的生日。
I feel so happy today because today is my birthday.

hěn gāo xìng néng gòu zài shēn zhèn hé nǐ men jiàn miàn 。
很高兴能够在深圳和你们见面。
It’s a pleasure to meet you in Shenzhen.

wǒ men dù guò le yī gè huān lè de liù yī ér tóng jiē 。
我们度过了一个欢乐的六一儿童节。
We had a fun and delightful Children's Day.

nà shì yī gè yú kuài de yè wǎn 。
那是一个愉快的夜晚。
It was a pleasant night.

fèn nù 愤怒: Anger
qì fèn 气愤: Furious
shēng qì 生气: Be mad at
bú mǎn 不满: Dissatisfied
zhèn nù 震怒: Be enraged

kàn le chéng guǎn ōu dǎ lǎo rén de shì pín hòu ，wǒ gǎn dào shí fèn qì fèn
看了城管殴打老人的视频后，我感到十分气愤。
After watching the video of ”Security hit the elder,” I was so furious.

wǒ shēng qì de shì tā cóng lái dōu bú kǎo lǜ wǒ de gǎn shòu 。
我生气的是他从来都不考虑我的感受。
What makes me so mad is that he never considers my feelings.

tā hěn bú mǎn lǎo bǎn de zhè gè ān pái
她很不满老板的这个安排。
She is dissatisfied with her manager’s arrangement.

wéi jī xiè mì de xiè mì háng wéi zhèn nù le zhèng fǔ guān yuán
维基泄密的泄密行为震怒了政府官员。
The leak by WikiLeaks has enraged the officials.

bēi āi 悲哀: Sorrow
shāng xīn 伤心: Sad
bēi tòng 悲痛: Grieved

hán méi méi hé lǐ léi léi fèn shǒu le ，dàn tā men yī diǎn dōu bú shāng xīn 。
韩梅梅和李雷雷分手了，但他们一点都不伤心。
Han Meimei broke up with Li Leilei, but neither of them feels sad about it.

tīng dào nà gè zuò jiā zì shā de xiāo xī ，wǒ shí fèn bēi tòng
听到那个作家自杀的消息，我十分悲痛。
I was grieved to hear about the suicide of that writer.

kǒng jù 恐惧: Fear
hài pà 害怕: Scared
kǒng huāng 恐慌: Panic

wǒ hěn hài pà chóng zǐ
我很害怕虫子。
I’m so scared of worms.

tū rán de qiāng shēng, yǐn fā xiàn chǎng yī zhèn kǒng huāng
突然的枪声，引发现场一阵恐慌。
The sudden gunshot panics the audiences in the scene.
