We suggest that you study 4-6 hours per week and learn for at least half a year. There are 150 words in HSK 1. Listening is the most important part and as long as you can understand PinYin. The test won't be difficult.
For HSK level 2. There are 300 words in HSK 1. Learn about one year and study 4-6hours per week would be fine. In this level it has more grammar point and sentence structures which mean understanding is as important as listening. The same with HSK 1 there will be two part in the test: listening and reading. And there is no character writing in it.
You need more than one and half a year. There will be 600 words. In this level you need to start learning how to write Chinese! Also there is a writing test in the examination.
The student who has learnt for 2 years can take it( the study time is not particularly as the guide) It includes 1200 words. And up to this level. The students can talk about daily life and simple things about work with local Chinese. Also they can write short passages.
There are 2500 words in HSK 5. Up to this level you can read Chinese magazines and books, see Chinese movies and give a lecture in Chinese. In HSK 6 there are more than 5000 words.
